LGBTQIA+ - The Communal Topic Empty LGBTQIA+ - The Communal Topic

Post by Yuunachi Fri Feb 05, 2016 9:33 pm

Originally posted by Neo Enigma, I wanted to bring this topic over to this forum since this is a safe space!
Sources taken from: Tahoe SAFE Alliance, LGBTQIA Resource Center Glossary, It's Pronounced Metrosexual.com

What Does LGBTQIA+ mean?
Lesbian – A female- identified person who is attracted romantically, physically, or emotionally to another female-identified person.
Gay – A male-identified person who is attracted romantically, physically, or emotionally to another male-identified person.
Bisexual – A person who is attracted romantically, physically, or emotionally to (traditionally men and women) only two genders.
Transgender – A person who is a member of a gender other than that expected based on anatomical sex.
Queer – An umbrella term which embraces a variety of sexual preferences, orientations, and habits of those who do not adhere to the heterosexual and cisgender majority. The term queer includes, but is not exclusive to lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transpeople, and intersex persons, traditionally, this term is derogatory and hurtful, however, many people who do not adhere to sexual and/or gender norms use it to self-identify in a positive way.
Intersex – Someone who’s physical sex characteristics are not categorized as exclusively male or exclusively female.
Asexual – A person who is not attracted to anyone, or a person who does not have a sexual orientation.
The + stands for the many, many more sexualities, genders, and romantic orientations included in the spectrum.

Other terms:
Ally: A person who does not identify as LGBTQIA, but supports the rights and safety of those who do.
Aromantic: is a person who experiences little or no romantic attraction to others and/or a lack of interest in forming romantic relationships.
Cisgender: a gender identity, or performance in a gender role, that society deems to match the person’s assigned sex at birth.  The prefix cis- means "on this side of" or "not across."
Demisexual/demiromantic: a sexual/romantic orientation in which someone feels sexual/romantic attraction only to people with whom they have an emotional bond. Most demisexuals/demiromantics feel sexual/romantic attraction rarely compared to the general population, and some have little to no interest in sexual activity. Demisexuals/demiromantics are considered to be on the asexual spectrum, meaning they are closely aligned with asexuality.
Gender: A social construct used to classify a person as a man, woman, or some other identity. Fundamentally different from the sex one is assigned at birth.
Gender Identity: A sense of one’s self as trans, genderqueer, woman, man, or some other identity, which may or may not correspond with the sex and gender one is assigned at birth.
Heterosexuality: A sexual orientation in which a person feels physically and emotionally attracted to people of a gender other than their own.
Monosexual/Monoromantic: People who have romantic, sexual, or affectional desire for one gender only. Heterosexuality and homosexuality are the most well-known forms of monosexuality.
Nonmonosexual/Nonmonoromantic: people who are attracted to more than one gender.
Pansexual/Panromantic: Terms used to describe people who have romantic, sexual or affectional desire for people of all genders and sexes.
Bigender: a person who fluctuates between two different gender identities.
Gender Fluid: gender fluid is a gender identity best described as a dynamic mix of two gender identities. A person who is gender fluid may always feel like a mix of the two genders or flux between different genders.
Nonbinary: an umbrella term covering any gender identity that doesn't fit within the gender binary. The label may also be used by individuals wishing to identify as falling outside of the gender binary without being any more specific about the nature of their gender.
Polyamory/Polyamorous: refers to the practice of, desire to, or orientation towards having ethically, honest, consensually non-monogamous relationships (i.e. relationships that may include multiple partners). This may include open relationships, polyfidelity (which involves more than two people being in romantic and/or sexual relationships which is not open to additional partners), amongst many other set ups.
Demigender: an umbrella term for nonbinary gender identities that have a partial connection to a certain gender. This includes the partly female identity demigirl, and the partly male identity demiboy. There are other partial genders using the "demi-" prefix for the same reasons. For example, deminonbinary, demifluid, demiflux, and so on. Like non-binary, demigender is also an identity within itself, for people who feel connection to the concept of gender rather than certain genders. Being a demigender "is not dependent on how much (as in percentage) someone identities as one gender; it solely depends on if a person identifies as partially. For some, they may identify with two or more genders while others may not."

No-no's and things NOT to be in this thread:
Ableism: The pervasive system of discrimination and exclusion that oppresses people who have mental, emotional and physical disabilities.
Homophobia:  The irrational hatred and fear of lesbian, gay, and queer people.  It can also impact the lives of bisexual, pansexual, transgender, intersex and asexual people.  In a broader sense, any disapproval of LGBTQIA people at all, regardless of motive.  Homophobia includes prejudice, discrimination, harassment, and acts of violence brought on by fear and hatred.  It occurs on personal, institutional, and societal levels.  Homophobia is closely linked with transphobia and biphobia.
Transphobia:  the fear or hatred of transgender people or people who do not meet society’s gender role expectations. Transphobia is closely linked with homophobia and biphobia.
Sexism: The cultural, institutional, and individual set of beliefs and practices that privilege men, subordinate women, and devalue ways of being that are associated with women.
Biphobia: A range of negative attitudes (e.g., fear, anger, intolerance, resentment, erasure, or discomfort) that one may have/express towards bisexual individuals. Biphobia can come from and be seen within the queer community as well as straight society. Biphobic – (adj) a word used to describe an individual who harbors some elements of this range of negative attitudes towards bisexual people.
Outing: involuntary or unwanted disclosure of another person’s sexual orientation, gender identity, or intersex status.
DO NOT USE ANY SLURS, EVER. THIS TOPIC DOES NOT ALLOW THE USAGE OF SLURS, EVEN IF IT ISN'T BEING USED TO DIRECTLY INSULT.

What are pronouns?
Pronouns are linguistic tools that we use to refer to people.  (i.e. they/them/theirs, she/her/hers, he/him/his). We believe that it is important to give people the opportunity to state the pronoun that is correct to use when referring to them.
IF YOU DON'T KNOW, PLEASE ASK FOR SOMEONE'S PRONOUNS - DON'T ASSUME! IT'S MUCH, MUCH BETTER TO ASK OR JUST USE GENDER-NEUTRAL TERMS IN THE INTERIM!

Everyone is free to express themselves in this thread and discuss their gender, sexuality, and anything else that relates to the spectrum! If you have any advice/terms you'd like added, let me know!

LGBTQIA+ - The Communal Topic Empty Re: LGBTQIA+ - The Communal Topic

Post by Quillan Fri Feb 05, 2016 10:28 pm

Thank you so much for bringing this topic here. This is the main reason I started OSS. I was upset when the LGBTQIA+ topic got locked on main forums, then the whole situation with the Mental Health topic. So I thought about it and was like "I don't have to deal with this, why not make my own space where people don't need to feel ashamed of themselves just because there are some intolerant people on oW forums." Anyways, I am so happy to see this topic here, I hope it thrives! Thank you Yuuna! I love you I love you I love you

i've seen a lot of people use bi(sexual/romantic) as a label expressing attraction towards one gender, as well as nonbinary genders, if that makes sense? seeing as some people find the terms gyne/androsexual offensive, some use bi & specify they are only attracted to girls & nonbinary people ^^. that never made much sense to me though, because i personally am of the opinion that poly(sexual/romantic) is an easier term to use when describing attraction to almost every gender.

aah yeah i've seen a lot of Discourse™ abt the area 'bi' covers and overlap with pan or poly ! in general though i'm not unattracted (not not attracted?) to any gender, which makes me lean towards pan, but bi still fits going under the "two or more" definition?? idk i'm just

aah babe i know shapeshifters cut them individually? i.e. you give them your measurements?
i bought a rubbish £5 one from ebay and i'm a d-dd and it gets me to to a b-a, which i'm better with, so hopefully when i can get the money for a binder from a reputable company i'll be able to get a better one?
